The company you keep says a lot about who you are.

It’s so easy to get caught up in popularity contests and trying to fit in with what all the ‘cool kids’ are doing. But just because the most popular kids are doing something, doesn’t mean you have to do it too. Surround yourself with people who make you a better person and challenge your mind. It will make you stronger because your company will make you strive to be great.

Don’t waste your time hanging out with friends who bring you down because in the long run they’re not helping you out. Instead of worrying about being popular and fitting in, try to take yourself away from the moment and look at the bigger picture. Although something may seem really important at the time, in all actuality it probably isn’t.

Going away to college is was major change that really made me realize a lot about what was important to me. I packed up and drove across the country to my new school and was able to leave a lot behind. I realized who was important to me and what kind of company I wanted to keep. When I was able to start over with a new social group I made sure that the people I chose to be friends with were going to make me a better person. It’s important not to get caught up in being lonely and trying to fit in a group just so you feel accepted.

You’re going to have to live with yourself for the rest of your life so try to make decisions now that you’re not going to feel bad about later. Find a great group of friends who you can trust and are smart and responsible and active and who you can have a lot of fun with but not compromise who you are. Remember what’s really important to you and don’t let anyone take that away. Be strong with who you are and what you believe in. Choose role models who you can look up to and can guide you on the right path to success.

And in the words of George Washington “Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for ’tis better to be alone than in bad company.”
