Nothing goes better with that little black dress than the shimmer of a deep red lip.
I know, I know. Lipstick probably isn’t one of those things you wear every day? It’s fancy, it’s for “dressy clothes” and it might be too bright on a fair skin tone. What, are you afraid you can’t “pull it off?”
Professional makeup artist Julie Hewett has a red shade for everyone, believing we should beautify ourselves from the lips up instead of from the eyes down. She proves to even the toughest critics of the color that they can wear it, too.
Doing makeup for the films “American Beauty,” “Pearl Harbor,” “Because I Said So,” “The Women,” “Spiderman 2″ and “Ocean’s 11, 12 and 13″ (to only name a few,) Hewett certainly holds an inherent knowledge of her trade. Especially in a film like “Pearl Harbor,” Hewett had to create such an exquisite shade of red so as to stick out amidst the grey and morbid tones of the war set. You can ever see it in this small photo of Kate Beckinsale here!

She has worked with some of our favorite actresses of today’s popular films, including Liv Tyler, Nichole Kidman, Hilary Swank, Mandy Moore, Kate Beckinsale, Debra Messing and Winona Ryder…and we know how beautiful they look on-screen!
So how do you figure out which red fits you? Hewett provides a guide of nine different red lipsticks, her “noir collection” that honors different decades, explaining skin tone compliments for each. The product stays on without bleeding, is triple pigmented and can be layered to customize your own red tone!
Here’s some of Hewett’s tips about red lipstick:
1. It is the best way to quickly brighten the face, making you look “awake, alive and polished.”
2. Each lipstick comes with a customized liner for the particular shade to bring out its depth, but also soften.
3. Because the makeup is so pigmented, apply one of her balms first; but if you want the full-strength look, apply directly out of the tube.
4. For a fuller lip, line with Nude Noir and then apply your choice of red. Add Julie Hewett Lip Lush in Harlow to the bottom lip, and line it with an eye pencil (reverse line) to create a crisp, full look.

Not to mention, this makeup expert stays as close to natural as possible.
“Collaborating with leading chemists, Julie has made lipsticks of the highest quality natural ingredients. The lipsticks are made of a Camellia oil base, which is said to be the closest to human skin oil, creating a perfect natural texture. Also using pure essential oils for fragrance, such as rosebud and orange blossom oil. Julie Hewett’s products perform to makeup artist’s standards,” her website states.
So where is Hewett now, you may ask? She’s actually doing makeup for Miley Cyrus on the set of the upcoming Disney film, “The Last Song.” If that’s not cool, I don’t know what is!
