The time for complexly fun summer designs is officially through, and we’re not yet ready for the metallic lacquers of the winter holidays. Fall is here, and the look is solid, bold and ultra glossy.

Now you know the general look, but what colors are best for autumn 2009?

Traditional:

If you prefer a traditional aesthetic, (mainly blush hues – reds, pinks, etc.) two colors are hot for this season.

Rose red: Possibly the most consistent of all polish shades. Popularized by the 1940s starlet, bring out your inner beauty queen with this classic look.

Coral pink: If you favor lighter shades, which are a great complement to darker skin tones, this salmon hue is perfect for those who prefer neutral pinks (with a hint of orange).

Trend:

One of the trendiest colors for fall is purple, but not just any shade.

Plum: Deep, warm hues are favorable, so stay away from lilacs and cool violets.

Royal blue: Though it’s officially a blue, its purple undertones are what put the “royal” in its title. The dark vibrancy of royal blue is great when you want your nails to stand out, so slather this lacquer on your tips for some attractive attention-getting.

Risky:

When feeling like getting a little crazy with your nail shade, look no further than this currently trendy green hue.

Emerald: it’s dark, bold and gorgeous. With subtle teal tints blended in a warm sea of evergreen, this shade is glam like the jewel after which it’s named.

Now remember, metallics and mattes are out. For fall, it’s all about the high gloss, so when attempting to paint your own nails, be sure to follow these three easy steps:

1. First of two coats: keep it thin for fast drying. Make sure your base coat is light and air-pocket-free.

2. Second and final polish coat: this is where you pile on the color. Remember to keep the brush on an angle with the handle tipped toward your nail, which works best for even coverage.

3. Top coat: a clear gloss polish sets the self-manicure in place, adds strength and an infinite amount of shine. This final step is a must!

Nail polish is an amazing and inexpensive hand accessory for your everyday, night out and special occasion. So proceed fashionably and wisely!
