Here are a few things I wish I’d known about parties before I got to college. I’ll share them with you so you don’t have to learn them the hard way.
1. You don’t have to go out to parties every weekend. Shocking but true. If doing keg stands at frat parties or squishing together for crowded, sweaty dancing just isn’t your thing, you don’t have to do it. Go out for dinner with your girlfriends, and watch a chick flick afterwards. Play cards or go see a basketball game with your guy friends. Start a movie club. Read a book. Maybe you can even study. Nobody’s going to judge you for not getting smashed Thursday though Saturday nights. That being said…
2. Be a classy drinker. If you do decide to go out to parties all weekend, there’s nothing wrong with that- provided you’re not stupid about it. Obviously don’t get arrested for drinking underage. More importantly, don’t do something you’re going to regret. Honestly, just be classy. Do you want to be the girl who gives sloppy kisses to everyone she sees, or the girl who is laughing and having fun without looking like an idiot? Exactly. You can party and have a good time without the Animal House antics.
3. Be safe. Your campus has probably already briefed you on this, but drinking is the # 1 factor for sexual assault. Sadly, I’ve known several girls over the years whom guys pressured or forced to do things while drunk that they didn’t want to do. It’s a horrible tragedy, and very widespread. Don’t let that be you. Go out with a bunch of your friends, and don’t leave without every member of the group. Watch your drink closely. Party safe.
