Everyone knows the economy is in the dumps right now. It’s affecting everyone around the country, especially now that Christmas is rapidly approaching. But did the recession jump start the holiday cheer and cause the Christmas season starting early this year?

You may have noticed that this year, Christmas cheer is in full swing. Stores began selling Christmas decorations BEFORE Halloween, a move that usually starts in mid November. Christmas music hit the radio a week before Thanksgiving, and the twinkling lights began popping up in the last week of November. “The Grinch Before Christmas” debuted earlier than ever this year, and I even saw “Miracle on 34th Street” on television in early October.

Why is the so-called “Christmas Creep” creeping harder this year? Most theories point to one thing- the recession. In 2009, many people suffered from unemployment, loss of business and the fear that they may never recover from the decline in the economy. Many pessimists believe the holiday rush started early this year to influence spenders to buy more gifts, spend more time in malls all over the United States and to boost the economy through Christmas expenses.

But many have a more optimistic view. It is, after all, the Christmas season, the time for miracles and happiness. In a time where so many people need a little joy in their lives, we seek out anything that can help.

“I believe the Christmas season started early this year to create a feeling of happiness throughout the United States. Everyone is stressed about the economy, and the Christmas music, lights and overall holiday spirit make most people smile. It’s definitely a good thing, especially this year,” said Erin Potter, 20, from Middletown, New Jersey.

So next time you’re worried about your wallet, just look around you. Take in the beautiful sights of Christmas lights, the irresistible smell of cookies, the warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you are putting the ornaments on your tree. Christmas time doesn’t last forever, so enjoy it while it’s here! Escape from the pressures and worries of everyday life, and embrace the “Christmas Creep.”
