Recently I had the honor of interviewing the sisters from Von Grey. Continue to read on about them, their music and their advice about being a teenager.

R:  Tell us about yourself and how you got into the music industry.

V: We are a group of 4 sisters who started playing classical music together at a very young age. After gaining a certain amount of musical understanding, we began to branch out into different genres – we wanted to create something that felt more personal, and songwriting was an easy way to do that. We’ve been growing as musicians and writers ever since, and have been fortunate enough to have crossed paths with people in the “industry” who are passionate and supportive!

R:  Tell us about your EP “Awakening”

V: Awakening is made up of 6 songs that Fiona and I (Annika) wrote over a pretty extended period of time. The songs have a definite acoustic backbone, but the production of the record involved some experimentation. We focused a lot on the instrumentation, trying to make sure that the parts were intricate enough to be musical on their own but still tastefully placed in order to leave room for some electronic/synth-y flourishes.

R:  Tell us about your new single?

V: Come On is definitely the peppiest song we have written. I actually came up the bulk of the song after spending some time listening to a lot of 80s pop music – my listening material probably heightened our urge to play with some new sonic textures that you just can’t get with violins, mandolins, and cello.

R: What is your favorite song from this EP and why?

V: My Reflection was the first song we wrote for the EP, and it is definitely my favorite! We toured the song a long time ago but weeded it out of our set material for various reasons. We weren’t even planning on recording it for Awakening, but we had some extra time in the studio and decided it would be fun to reintroduce it. It is one of the first songs we ever wrote that used what we then considered an “experimental” keyboard sound – I am probably biased towards the song because it holds a bit of sentimental value for me!

R:  What is your favorite song to play on stage and why?

V: I love performing Deliverance because it is the only song we play live that has a dramatic tempo change.

R:  Where can people get your music?

V: Our music is available all over the internet (iTunes, Amazon, and probably wherever else people virtually buy music from these days), and of course we sell it at our live shows.

R:  If you could tour with any five people or groups who would they be and why?

V: St. Vincent, Little Dragon, alt-J, Bjork, and/or Lykke Li, and mostly because I would love to be able to watch them kill it on stage night after night!!

R:  I read that you all are getting ready to tour.  Can you tell us a little bit about that and where can people find out what cities you will be heading to?

V: We like to tour as much as possible, and will be going out on the road very soon! All of our dates are posted on our website, www.vongreymusic.com.

R: What is it like touring with your sisters?  How do you handle disagreements?

V: Being sisters makes the creative process a lot easier because we are all so open with each other, but it really doesn’t play a huge role in the band’s dynamic. We handle our roles as musicians as jobs (jobs that we absolutely adore, but still jobs). That means that we do our best to maintain an air of professionalism. We don’t let trivial arguments get in the way of achieving what it is we want to achieve!

R:  What are five things people may not know about you?

V: As a band? Hmmm…. Fiona, Kathryn, and I were part of a Céili band before we started von Grey,

R:  What are some of your future goals?

V: We just want to be able to create the music that we feel most passionately about, and we hope to be able to share it with other people who can also dig it! That is always the main goal. Creating something we are proud of and then sharing it with as many people as possible.

R:  It is not easy being a teenage girl.  What advice would you give the in general?

V: There are so many stereotypes about girls in general, and I think the best advice I can give right now is to just ignore all of those prescribed roles and pigeonholes. If you want to do the things that girls/people around you are doing, do it! If not, don’t. Just do whatever makes you happy and, as long as you aren’t hurting anybody in the process, forget about what other people think.

R:  Other than this one, what is the strangest question you have ever been asked?

V: We usually stock up on fruit when we are touring and keep a cooler in the van and it is very rare that we eat fast food, but Petra happened to mention Taco Bell during an interview we did a long time ago and we have been asked to list our Taco Bell orders a few times since then!

R:  Are you on any social networking sites?  If so, what are their addresses?  Do you have an official website?

V: We are on facebook, twitter, and instagram as vonGreyMusic.

R:  Is there anything else you would like to add or say to your fans?

V: We are just so thankful for all of the good vibes that people continually send us, and we hope to be able to continue to create music that makes us deserving of the support and love!

R:  Von Grey, thank you for the interview.  It was an honor.

V: Thanks so much!
