Deciding Your Dream Career? How To Choose What Direction Your Dreams Are Leading You

happy-girlDeciding on your dream job is a hard task at any age. When you’re moving on to college and university, there’s a lot of pressure to know what you want to do. There’s no denying that knowing where you want to end up can help you make the best choices. But, how do you decide? There are so many awesome career paths you could take. Your choice is hopefully going to see you through many years, so you need to make sure it’s right. Here are a few ways you can help yourself decide.

THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU’RE GOOD AT

Thinking about where your skills and passions lie is an excellent place to start in your career journey. After all, you want to be good at the job you end up in! It’s important to aim for the stars, of course, but you always want to look at careers that are practical for you. Each career has its own desired skill set. A doctor is expected to learn the bones of the body, while a lawyer is expected to have an extensive knowledge of various aspects of law. There are going to be things to learn in any career choice. Think about where your knowledge stands and consider which careers could use your particular knowledge. If you’re good at fixing, you could become a mechanic. If you’re happier in the corner with a book, a more academic career, like teaching, could be the best choice.

THINK ABOUT YOUR PASSION

You don’t want to spend your life on a career you aren’t passionate about. Make sure you’re picking a career you can see yourself being happy in for the long term. Consider what you enjoy doing, and how that could translate into a job. There are jobs for just about every passion you can think; it’s just about finding the right one! Do a little research into your chosen area and see which jobs are available, and what you skills you need to get them.

MAKE THE LEAP

Once you’ve decided on a career choice, it can be hard to make the leap. This is particularly the case if there was a certain job your parents wanted you to do, or if your chosen job isn’t particularly well paid. Don’t let that put you off taking steps towards the future you want. People who care can sometimes make the choice harder, but it’s your life, and you have to go after what you want. If your parents are unhappy, sit them down and try to explain your choice. They love you, and if they can see how passionate you are, they should approve. Don’t be put off if your dream job seems hard to achieve, either. The sky is your limit, and you can get anything you want if you work hard enough. Do your research and see what work would be involved. If you think you’re up for the challenge, go ahead and try it! What’ve you got to lose?
