Express Yourself: Simple Ways To Embrace Your Individuality

There are a lot of ways that your attitudes change as you get older but there are few more significant than the desire to “fit in.” When you’re a kid or a teenager, then it can often feel as though there is nothing more important in the world than fitting in. You want to be just like everyone else and do what everyone else is doing. However, once you reach your twenties, you realize something, being yourself is WAY more interesting than being like anyone else. So, whether you’re still in school or you’re breaking out into the adult world for the first time, here are a few things that can help you embrace your individuality.

Surround yourself with supportive people

One of the main reasons that so many young people end up feeling desperate to fit in and be like everyone else is peer pressure. When you’ve got people around you who are telling you how to look and what kind of person you should be, the idea of breaking out of that can be incredibly scary. That’s why it’s so important to surround yourself with people who support you no matter who you want to be. If you want to express yourself in a certain way and there are people in your life telling you that you need to change, then that’s a pretty good sign that you should drop those people from your life. You don’t need friends who only care about you if you do what they want.

Find your own style

If you want to start feeling more comfortable with who you are on the inside, why not start expressing it on the outside? Having a sense of your individuality come through in your personal style is a great way to show it not only to the world but to yourself as well. This can be in your clothing, hair, accessories and more. Of course, you don’t need to have it on show all of the time. Plenty of people have things like tattoos and piercings in secret places that other people don’t have to see all the times. Check out this article to see how a belly button piercing can be both an incredibly expressive sign of who you are and also something very private and personal. You’ll be amazed at how much happier you feel with yourself when you start expressing it openly and honestly.

Stop caring what other people think

This is the hardest thing to do, but it’s also the most important thing. When you’re a kid, it’s incredibly easy to base your sense of self-worth on what other people think of you, but there’s only one person whose opinion you should care about: yours. It doesn’t matter what other people think of your music, hobbies, style, or anything else. If you’re happy with who you are then that’s all that matters. In reality, people who try and put you down for unapologetically being yourself probably just projecting insecurities that they have about who they are. Of course, that’s not always easy, here’s a great article that can help you get started on the road towards putting aside other people’s opinions:

Remember you’re never going to be as good at being someone else as they are, so you might as well just be yourself. After all, there’s only one of you!
