Another year, another set of broken promises. We all do it!

Yes, I’m talking to you. We write down or mentally list our New Year’s resolutions which most likely include some type of workout regimen or fitness promise. But how often do we actually follow through? 2010 could be the year you take up a Zumba class or invest in the Wii Fit.

The American Council on Exercise (www.acefitness.org) came up with a list of the top ten fitness trends for 2010. The list is based on a survey of personal trainers, group fitness experts, and lifestyle and weight management consultants. This year, one of the most obvious conclusions is that consumers will be looking to arrange their fitness regimen with time and money in mind. I listed five out of the ten trends below.

Cost-Conscious Workouts at Fitness Clubs and at Home: Gyms will alter programming and training to accommodate cost-conscious members, while at-home workouts utilizing small, portable fitness equipment will be popular.

Group Training: Instead of pricey personal training sessions, people will take advantage of small-group training and group classes. This might be a good time to get some friends together and go on a run, hike or do yoga together.

Exergaming: This year, fitness clubs will integrate fitness-based video games into their programming. Popularity of Wii Sports and PC-based Dancetown will continue to grow.

Specialty Exercise Classes: Ethnic dancing, pole dancing and classes like Zumba will remain popular this year. Fusion-type classes will also become popular, like the Bodypump and Bodyflow classes offered at 24 Hour Fitness.

Fitness Training Tools: Technology is being integrated into the fitness world through online training and scheduling tools. Check out gadgets like the Fitbit (www.fitbit.com) or the Bodybugg (www.bodybugg.com) that track calories burned, distance traveled and even sleep quality.

If your jeans are feeling a little tighter than normal, you aren’t the only one! We all seem to feel a bit bloated over the holidays. Now it’s time to start thinking in terms of calories…and by that I mean burn more than you eat. Not easy! Below are a few ways to cut extra calories (that means in addition to your work out!) throughout the day.

Power Breakfast: Sustain energy and curb hunger with a hearty breakfast. Incorporate nuts, protein, whole grains, fruits and veggies into your morning routine.

Wear Heals: If your daily activity allows, slip on a pair of your best stilettos, wedges or even healed boots for an extra calorie burn everywhere you go. You could also invest in a pair of new ‘shape-up’ shoes that are rapidly gaining popularity.

(Photo www.shapeupshoes.com)

Get On the Move: Don’t be sedentary! Move as much as possible! Make the long walk to the mailbox instead of driving, park farther away from the grocery store, carry your bags instead of using a cart, run up the stairs instead of walking…I think you get the idea.

Chew Gum: Research shows chewing gum may reduce calorie intake and also help burn calories. Sugar-free varieties of gum are only 5 calories a stick! Get your sugar fix by chewing a tasty stick of gum, instead of reaching for that 100+ calorie cookie.

Tired of your dull complexion or dry skin patches? There’s a brand new way to get sparkly celebrity skin this winter. Kristen Stewart, Drew Barrymore and Gwyneth Paltrow are using one of the latest beauty trends called nutricosmetics or cosmeceuticals. You may be familiar with nutraceuticals, products with medicinal and nutritional value. Nutricosmetics are oral products created specifically for beauty and skin health. It’s important to know they do not undergo the same testing as pharmaceutical drugs.

Stewart has reportedly been using GliSODin Skin Nutrients Daily Formula to get her gorgeous, natural skin glow. GliSODin offers four different formulas from Skin Brightening to Detoxification Formula. The products are made from non-genetically modified melon extract naturally rich in superoxide dismutase (SOD), which is known as the “Enzyme of Life.” It boosts immunity, reduces aging and builds antioxidants. The best results are seen in 3-6 weeks of using the supplements.

Another Twilight actress, Ashley Greene, has been using BORBA (www.borba.com). Drinkable skincare from BORBA combines exotic fruits, antioxidants, essential vitamins and minerals to improve and protect skin. This option may be a little lighter on your budget. Try the Skin Balance Water Sampler for just $20.00. BORBA offers serums, skin treatments, moisturizers, cosmeceuticals, balance waters and even gummi boosters.

Medical and wellness spas in New York and L.A. sell GliSODin products. On Amazon.com, the Advanced Daily Formula is priced at $95.00 for 60 pills. Also check out www.spalook.com.

Am I the only one who feels awkward using the stability ball at the gym? I never seem to get in the correct position. Then I fall, or almost fall and embarrass myself. Here’s an idea: bring a stability ball, balance ball or whatever you call it to the comfort of your living room or bedroom. You can gain confidence and balance on the ball while toning abs and obliques. Also, increase back strength and other target areas as you get more advanced. There are hundreds of exercises out there. Below are a few that I find most beneficial, especially for beginners.

Gain Core Strength

Plank Press: Kneel in front with forearms on the ball. Keep a flat back as you press toes into the floor and push body into plank position. Lower and repeat sets of 10-15 reps. If you need more balance prop the ball against the wall.

Knee Folds: Sit on the ball with feet flat on floor. Sit up tall, legs and feet about hip distance apart. Pull in abs and pick up one foot off the floor and lift with control. Alternate legs at least five times.

Better Flexibility

Back Stretch: Lie on your back over the ball. Reach arms overhead and touch the ground, in a bridge position.

Chest Stretch: Kneel on both knees facing the ball. Clasp hands together and place on top of the ball. Roll away from the ball, arms are straight and push down into the ball, trying to move the chest toward the ground. Hold up to 30 seconds.

Buff and Tone

Push-Up: Arms are shoulder width apart. Rest your thighs on the ball while lowering upper body to the floor. Start at 5-10 reps and work toward 20.

Squats: Stand with legs hip-width apart. Lift the ball over head with arms extended, keeping arms close to your ears. Squat down holding for 2-3 seconds and come back up. Go for 20 reps and feel the burn.

Stability balls are available in several sizes. Make sure to pick the right size for your height. They also range in price, so start with a cheaper model to make sure you like the work out. Store the ball in a closet near the TV and break it out when watching your favorite show. Maybe one of these days I’ll be an expert on the stability ball and show off my moves at the gym.

Winter is imminent across the country. As the temperatures drop, we tend to stay inside, get less exercise and eat heavier foods. I don’t know about you, but when I can’t spend time outdoors, cabin fever gets the best of me. My mood changes and I just feel…blah! Never fear, mood-boosting foods are here. Bonus: I combined all five foods into on delicious salad.

Fish with Omega-3 Fatty acids

It is recommended we eat fish at least three times a weak to reap the benefits of Omega-3 Fatty acids. While this can be difficult and expensive, the health benefits are worth the trouble. Look for salmon, tuna, shrimp and farmed catfish.

Spinach

Rich in iron, spinach is an easy way to feel better instantly. Many young women can become iron deficient and feel fatigued. The pre-washed baby spinach packets are ready to grab off grocery store shelves. Also try frozen spinach by simply adding it to pasta or soup.

Kidney Beans

Also known as ‘chili beans,’ these light or dark red beans are very popular in Indian cuisine and Creole dishes. Kidney beans are low in sugar and carbohydrates, but high in protein, iron, potassium and folic acid. Beans leave you with a full tummy.

Berries

Strawberries are an excellent source of Vitamin C and flavonoids, which are known for antioxidant activity. Blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are also on the list for antioxidants. Blueberries are said to help prevent cancer and other diseases, as well as inflammation.

Almonds and Walnuts

Packed with B6 vitamins, these nuts can calm anxiety and depression. B6 vitamins help the body convert tryptophan into mood-boosting serotonin. Keep a baggie in the car for emergencies.

Combine all five mood-boosting foods into a refreshing salad. All you need is a light dressing such as balsamic or poppy seed. Wash the spinach and berries. Mix the walnuts, almonds, berries and dressing in a bowl. Top it off with gorgonzola or feta cheese and baked salmon.

The holidays bring shopping, parties and tons of yummy, but often BAD seasonal foods. According to Eat This Not That, the average person consumes an extra 600 calories a day between Thanksgiving and New Years. I rounded up a few items at some of your favorite places that you’ll want to stay away from. But don’t worry, I added some alternatives so you won’t go hungry.

Seasonal Sandwiches

It sounds amazing! This creation from Cosi isn’t the worst item on the list, but it has 450 calories, 10 grams of fat and 67 carbohydrates. Watch out for another seasonal favorite, the Steak TBM (tomato, basil and mozzarella) Sandwich with 829 calories and 55 grams of fat! Try the Turkey Light sandwich with roasted turkey tenders, shredded romaine and honey mustard has 390 calories, 5 grams of fat and 62 carbs.

Sweet Potatoes

Boston Market’s Sweet Potato Casserole is one of many enticing side dishes. Before you dive in, think about the 460 calories, 16 grams of fat and 77 carbs. The Macaroni and Cheese surprisingly has fewer calories at 300 OR bake a sweet potato at home with a little butter for between 100 and 200 calories.

Peppermint Mocha

Starbucks has a variety of warm beverages this winter. The Peppermint Mocha might bring you holiday cheer, but it will only add to your waistline. Here is the breakdown for a Grande (16 oz): 410 calories, 15 grams of fat and 63 carbs!!! Eeek!!! Instead, try the Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte. The Grande is only 130 calories, zero grams of fat and 19 carbohydrates. Always skip the whipped cream, unless you are splurging!

Holiday Cookies

The Gingerbread Man Cookie from Au Bon Pain has 320 calories, 10 grams of fat and 53 carbohydrates. Next time, grab a couple of Gingerbread Squares. Two squares have 120 calories, 5 grams of fat and 16 carbohydrates.

Blizzard

Dairy Queen just launched the Candy Cane Chill Blizzard! Before you start drooling, it has 740 calories! The medium Pumpkin Pie Blizzard has 770 calories, 27 grams of fat and 118 carbohydrates. Not too many alternatives at DQ! Put this on your splurge list.

(

It can be hard to make healthy eating choices during the hustle bustle of the season. Remember that it’s OK to splurge on some of these delights! Keep in mind the amount of calories you are taking in and go for an extra long jog/walk or eat a smaller dinner if you treat yourself to an afternoon cookie or coffee.

The smells and tastes of the season are upon us. Just thinking about the turkey roasting, potatoes mashing and pumpkin pie baking puts a smile on my face! I ventured into my local drug store on the hunt for seasonal beauty products that remind me of Thanksgiving. Not only will these products keep you smelling and looking fabulous, they won’t stray from your budget.

Just say YES

The new Yes line stands out on the drug store shelf with its colorful packaging. The products combine organic fruits and vegetables (carrots, tomatoes and cucumbers) with 26 minerals from the Dead Sea. The Yes To Tomatoes Totally Tranquil Facial Hydrating Lotion ($14.99) also combines rosemary and red pepper. I’ll admit I got a little hungry reading the ingredients! The smell is light and fresh, not overpowering. The carrot and cucumber products also have a delightful fragrance. The line has everything from volumizing shampoo to night cream.

Merlot Line

Nothing completes a big meal like a bottle of wine. At the beauty counter inside my local Walgreen’s, this elegant line of skin treats caught my eye. The Merlot Natural Grape Seed Purifying Peel-Off Mask ($14.99) is perfect for getting rid of those blackheads. I love the way peel-off masks feel – and they don’t make a huge mess. Also, look for the Merlot 100% Pure Grape Seed Oil for repairing cuticles and softening skin.

Pumpkin Spice

It was hard to find any products using pumpkin at the drug store. I checked out the Philosophy website because they always have yummy treats for the season. The award-winning Pumpkin Pie shampoo, shower gel and bubble bath from Philosophy ($20) will keep you smelling like pie all year long! The three-in-one product allows you to indulge in pumpkin pie and skip the calories.

Enjoy your leftovers! Don’t forget to check Black Friday and Cyber Monday beauty deals!

The Twilight Saga: New Moon opens Friday (SCREAM!). If you didn’t know about this epic movie premier, you might not be living on this planet! The stars of the movie are everywhere this week, so it’s only fitting to examine movie make-up. Sorry werewolves, there isn’t much to work with on the beauty front. I studied the official New Moon website and trailer looking at the vampires Edward, Alice, the Cullen family and the Volturi.

Porcelain Skin

If you want to look like one of the Volturi, THINK LAYERS. Then, start with the it stick concealer from Benefit ($20.) Follow with a creamy foundation like Stilla Illuminating Liquid in 10 Watt ($38) for a sheer glow. Finish with Hydrating Mineral Veil by Bare Escentuals ($19) to absorb oil and soften complexion.

(Photos by www.sephora.com)

Blood Red Lips

Benetint is a chic two in one product from Benefit. The bottle looks like nail polish, but it’s actually lip and cheek tint. The rose colored stain is said to be ‘kiss-proof,’ according to the Benefit website. They also call it ‘innocent yet provocative.’ If that doesn’t sound like The Twilight Saga, I don’t know what else does. Apply three dots to the apples of cheeks and blend quickly with fingers ($28).

Sparkly Eyes

Coastal Contacts designed contact lenses specifically for Twilight. Get the golden amber eye color for $30 per lens. The company practically sold out for Halloween! Tons of wild lenses are available, including Vampire Red, Black Out and Bloodlust.

Dark Nails

Many of the vampires in New Moon have dark nails. I’ve been using OPI Nail Lacquer in Siberian Nights, which is deep purple with a minor shine. They also make a matte color, Lincoln Park After Dark which looks closer to black ($9).

-Alexxa

Now you’re ready to look just like one of the neck-biters for the premier…..just get some fake teeth and you’ll be a spitting image! (Unless, of course, you don’t want to go that far…..)

With the holidays quickly approaching, our schedules are getting busy, busy, busy! Whether you are going from class straight to the gym or working long days and always find yourself in the drive- thru grabbing a quick snack, there are some healthy alternatives to consider. Health experts recommend snacks be kept under 100 calories. You can keep these snacks in your backpack or even in the car and get your fix without packing on the calories.

Snack Pack

I’m drooling just thinking about my 60 calorie chocolate pudding! The latest flavor from JELL-O is Boston Cream Pie. YUM!

Sunflower Seeds

I always keep a pack of these little guys in my car for salt cravings and when I’m not hungry but want to eat something. They keep your mouth busy. Health benefits include Vitamin E, magnesium and selenium. Try the ranch flavor for a little zest!

100 Calorie Packs

These mini bags of popular treats like Wheat Thins, Oreos and Twinkies aren’t necessarily the healthiest alternative, but they are still low in calories and fat. (And better than eating a sleeve of Oreos!) Mini chocolate, strawberry and carrot cupcakes from Hostess have just 3 grams of fat and 100 calories. Say goodbye to your sweet tooth!

Fruits & Veggies

Duh! We all know they fill us up and are easy grab-and-go foods. Celery with peanut butter or cream cheese is one of my favorites. Apples, oranges, bananas, carrots, soy beans, bell peppers…and the list goes on. Here’s a quick tip; when you get home from the store, slice up your bell pepper or celery stalk and put them in little baggies. Then they are ready to go when you are.

Hairstyles come and go. We get them from celebrities, magazines, trendsetters, friends and even public figures (like Sarah Palin, for example). After seeing an infomercial for Bumpits, I had to check out the website and find out more about this unique-looking hair accessory.

Like most As Seen On TV products, Bumpits are oh-so affordable at $9.99, plus shipping. But order online and get the bogo offer which includes 4 large Bumpits, 4 mini Bumpits and 2 free Hollywood Bumpits. You can choose from four colors. Easy-enough-to-follow instructions are shown on the website, along with a helpful video.

I haven’t tried this product yet. (Hey, it’s no Snuggie!) I’m not ready to shell out the ten bucks quite yet. I’m curious to find out what you think. Are Bumpits comfortable? Is anyone you know wearing them? And most importantly, is this style here to stay?

Tell me what you think.
