Teacher Appreciation and Mother’s Day
By: DeAnna Britton
With Teacher Appreciation Day being May 4th and Mother’s Day being May 9th, I found it was time to reflect on the people who have made an impact on my life. First, I shall start by sharing my memories of my favorite teacher throughout school.
Paula Beeler is many things. She’s a math teacher at my old high school, she’s a wife, she’s a mother, she was my field hockey coach, but most importantly of all, she is my mentor. I’ve known her since I was a freshman in high school. I’ve been in two of her classes, was one of her players for field hockey, her teacher’s assistant for a semester and an admirer of her. I used to go to her whenever I had a problem in life and she would help me through it as best as possible.
No matter what grade I was in, I knew she would always be there for me if I ever needed her and that comforted me to no end. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it is that every student should have a teacher that they can go to and be open with, a teacher that they can count on to never give up on them.
Some of the things she taught me was organization, how to make and complete a “to-do” list, how to dodge in field hockey, how to do algebra and how to open up to people. I wrote an essay on her while I was in high school and it won second place in the contest. Needless to say, she’s been an important person in my life. So for Teacher Appreciation Day, I honor her. I am proud to say we still keep in contact and I see her every time I come home from college.
Now I move onto the woman who gave birth to me twenty years ago. My mother, Tammy, is an exceptional mother. Not only has she been there for me throughout the years but she’s also been there for my friends too, which I appreciate greatly. She’s been a pre-school teacher since I was three years old. I admire her love for children and her passion to help them learn, grow and influence them in the best way possible.
My mom has always been understanding and open. Although I never took full advantage of it, she was always there for me when I needed to talk about something. Her compassion and friendliness inspired me to act the same way towards people. I personally believe I am a good human being, and I owe this mostly to her for raising me that way.
As Mother’s Day approaches, I realize that I never tell her how much I appreciate her and am grateful that she’s there for me. For me, it’s hard to vocalize. So instead I’ll say it on paper, in print, that I hope she knows how much I love her. As I will not be with her on this day because I will be in New York, I hope she knows I will be thinking about her. After all she’s my mother; she’ll always be a part of me.

I would have to say that my 10th and 11th grade English teacher, Ms. Billings, was my favorite teacher. She encouraged me to keep writing no matter what.
