by Bethany Hamilton, author of Body and Soul: A Girl’s Guide to a Fit, Fun and Fabulous Life
As a professional surfer who has overcome incredible challenges, Bethany Hamilton shares her expertise as an athlete and a Christian in her new book Body & Soul. She shows readers how spiritual health is just as important as physical health. Bethany will help girls become their best “selves” ever with fun workouts especially designed for them, simple and tasty recipes, and advice for living a balanced life. Bethany offers these 5 tips for committing to a healthy physical and spiritual lifestyle:
Make the first step and commit to living a healthy lifestyle. Bethany says, “Ask yourself this, ‘Do I really want to give this whole healthy thing a go?’ Because when it comes down to it, it’s a decision only you can make. Trust me, I’ve learned that the hard way.”
Know that God is with you every step of the way. Bethany says, “The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that God is bigger than any obstacle we face. He is bigger than any big, scary wave that may come our way— and through Him we can overcome just about anything.”
Focus on your fitness. “Being in the present is an enormous part of getting your mind in the get-fit game.”
- Remember that your body is a gift from God, so cherish it! Bethany says, “I believe my body is a temple— and I want to take good care of it. It’s important for me to make smart choices and eat foods that give me all the nutrients I need.
The best tool for a healthy life is prayer. Bethany says, “Ask the Lord to help you make these changes real— not only for your physical health but for your spiritual health as well.”
Body and Soul: A Girl’s Guide to a Fit, Fun and Fabulous Life is available in bookstores and online on May 6, 2014.
Bethany Hamilton has become a source of inspiration to millions through her story of determination, faith and hope. In 2003, Bethany lost her left arm while surfing to a 14-foot tiger shark. Rather than let her career as a rising surf star come crashing down, Bethany miraculously returned to the water one month after the attack, a year later won her first National title, and has since realized her dream of surfing professionally. Her unbelievably positive attitude fascinated the world, and her story has been told in an autobiography and later adapted to the 2011 film, Soul Surfer. Bethany and her husband, Adam Dirks, are involved in many charitable efforts, including Friends of Bethany, which she and her family created to help shark attack survivors, traumatic amputees, and serves to inspire others through her life story. Now as a professional surfer, motivational speaker, and healthy lifestyle advocate, Bethany continues to touch and inspire lives globally.
